How does turmeric (and other spices) improve this meal’s health profile?

Oxidation of fats occurs during cooking. Turmeric, along with other anti-oxidant herbs such as clove, rosemary, sage, oregano, and cinnamon have a powerful anti-oxidant properties that reduce the oxidation of fats during cooking.

Spiced Ground Beef and Lamb Meatballs:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound ground beef

  • 1/2 pound ground lamb

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander

  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon ghee or olive oil

For the Yogurt-Mint Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt

  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves, finely chopped

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground lamb, chopped onion, minced garlic, turmeric, cumin, coriander, paprika, salt, and pepper.

  2. Add the egg to the mixture and combine until well incorporated.

  3. Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter.

  4. Heat ghee or olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.

  5. Add the meatballs to the skillet and cook until they are browned on all sides and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes.

  6. While the meatballs are cooking, prepare the yogurt-mint sauce. In a small bowl, mix together the Greek yogurt and finely chopped mint leaves. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  7. Serve the spiced meatballs with your choice of sides, such as rice or pita bread, and drizzle the yogurt-mint sauce over the meatballs or use it as a dipping sauce.
